Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

The Chairman Knows…

WHAT an interesting experience it was to witness the Mariners' pre-season tour of southern Scandinavia. The highlight of the Ryan Air enabled trip (£9 one way to Malmo) was the game against Trelleborgs.

Billed as a 'festival of football', our guys meandered to a win against a struggling 'premiership' team (I'd seen them the previous evening in a televised game between the 'premiership strugglers' and they got beat four zip).

One of the very few Town there fans blagged us into the VIP lounge after the game ('blagger', my friend, if you're reading this, thanks). Town's chairman was passing the time of day with the Trelleborgs' chairman, when the question of goalkeepers evidently arose. Our man was set a posing question, namely where we had acquired one of our goalkeepers from. Stuck for an answer, he approached the table we were at. Having been given the answer he sought, our chairman said: "Thanks lads, I knew you'd be able to put me right."

Even at 10.30 at night, it is still light in Southern Sweden in mid-July. It is one of the most unnerving experiences I have ever had: walking back to a hotel on the southern tip of nowhere, at 10.30 at night, in broad daylight, having been asked by the chairman of the football club I support which team we'd sign a goalkeeper from.

No doubt others have similar accounts to relay.
