Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Preston 0 Grimsby Town 0

By: Fishy News Team
Date: 22/12/2001

A MAKESHIFT Grimsby Town side gained a deserved point at Preston's Deepdale this afternoon thanks chiefly to the heroics of Welsh International 'keeper Danny Coyne, who made a string of world class saves to deny North End and keep the Mariners in the game.

At times Town lived far too close for the comfort of the 150 Grimsby faithful who had gathered to witness the game and Preston practically laid siege to the Grimsby goal for long periods, having 27 shots on goal! Each time North End found the target, however, Coyne was at hand to frustrate them, and made five or six top notch saves to keep Town in the game.

As the game progressed, Grimsby became increasingly dangerous on the break and substitute Michael Boulding (who had come on as second half replacement for debutant Chris Thompson, who forced to leave the pitch with a facial injury) in particular gave the Mariners some pace on the break to exploit the opportunities presented to them.

Town indeed could even have gone on and won the game when the former Mansfield winger, playing in a forward role, was presented with a golden opportunity, but chose to shoot rather than pass on no less than three occasions.
