The Ray Lucas Column: Good Start Grovesie

By: Ray Lucas

IT'S BEEN two games since Paul Groves slipped quietly into the Grimsby Town hot-seat. And what a two games they have been! Saturday's fixture against Portsmouth meant a lot to me, as it was my first chance to catch the Mariners in action at home this season.

What we got was a fantastic display. Phil Jevons showed on Saturday just how good he can be. The cold day was also warmed up by a goal and good performance from youngster Simon Ford.

Although the old frailties may still be there, Paul seems to have got the Mariners molded into a better unit. The rumours are rife that Gary Croft may be returning in a bid to get his faltering career back on track. All this speculation means despite our precarious position, things could finally be looking up. Groves held the backline together on Saturday, and even Tony Gallimore has improved.

But most significantly for me was Danny Coyne putting in his best display since Town beat Liverpool at Anfield. Despite my criticisms of Mr Groves in my last column, at least he's given the youngsters a fair shake. Ben Chapman looks like a class act.

I feared the worst when Town fell behind to Peter Crouch's daisycutter, but we battled back well. I couldn't have asked for a better start under the new boss! Keep Fordy in the team and who knows what might happen.

There is little to say about Town's lifeless draw at Oakwell yesterday except that Town looked solid.

Maybe I was too harsh. Good work Grovesie
