Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Croft to Join Cardiff

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/05/2002

FORMER Grimsby Town full back Gary Croft is looking to join up with ex-Town boss Lennie Lawrence at Cardiff City after a loan spell at Ninian Park. The 28-year-old utility player is looking for a new club after a disastrous spell with Ipswich Town.

Croft has asked for his contract to be terminated so that he is free to join City for the start of next season. The Burton-born full back, who spent played three games on loan at Ninian Park towards the end of last season, is keen to restart his footballing after three unsuccessful years at Portman Road.

Croft, who has one year left on his contract with the Suffolk club, has asked Ipswich manager George Burley to terminate his contract, and is hoping to be available on a free transfer.

"I've had a chat with manager George Burley. I've got a year to go on my contract, but he is prepared to let me go. Hopefully I can go with no fee. I think he may be agreeable to allow that." explained Croft.

Burley says he will wait and see what offers come in for Croft before deciding whether to ask for a fee.

Croft left Grimsby in 1996 for a six figure sum to join big-spenders Blackburn in the Premiership, and looked to have a glittering career ahead of him. In those six years, however, he has started in only 63 league games for Rovers, from whom he joined Ipswich, and in two brief loan spells at Wigan and Cardiff.
