Paul Groves Speaks Out About Cuts!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 31/05/2002

PAUL Groves said he knows too well the predicament the Mariners are in but hopes that an injection of TV cash can help Town to avoid making a single cutback this summer. Revealing that he is desperate to keep the current structure of the club in place he realises only TV money can do that.

Grimsby Telegraph said yesterday that Groves and his assistant Graham Rodger had not formally agreed to the new financial reforms and the cuts which include a possible huge pay cut for non-playing staff and deferred appearance bonuses for players, have not been set in stone.

Groves told the Telegraph: "I'm hoping that we can go forward and that no-one at the club has to make sacrifices. Ultimately the decisions will be financial and money will dictate what happens to this club. When we know what position we're in financially then we can make decisions. If we get some TV money then hopefully the finances will be there to do everything we want, and that is to keep the structure of the football as it is."

"We want a youth team, a first team squad and a reserve team. We also want to bring in players and strengthen areas of the club wherever we can."

"Everybody wants the football club to survive and everybody is behind that. The chairman is just spelling out how bad the situation is at the moment. If the TV money doesn't come in then we are going to have to take a long, hard look at the possibilities. "We accept that, and we know that's the position the club are in. But I'm still hopeful that some TV cash will come so that we can avoid any of these cuts - but we just don't know."
