Butterfield Signs For Palace For 4 Years!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 05/07/2002

DANNY Butterfield signed a four year contract with Crystal Palace today but was unhappy about the way Grimsby treated him feeling they let him down and failed to sign him even though a 50% pay cut was on the cards.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports Danny as saying: "It's a great move for me, but I'm sad to be leaving Grimsby. To initially be told I could leave on a free was disappointing. I heard in the summer that other players were being mentioned who might be coming in when I hadn't been sorted out.

"I played every game last year and the attention was elsewhere. That might be me just being picky, but there you go. "I've enjoyed my time at Grimsby and I want to say thank you to everyone there. If I had to leave it would have been nice to go for a fee to earn the club some money. If the ITV Digital money was still there they could be challenging for mid-table."

"The lads they (the Mariners) have got will stick together and work as a collective unit. The worry is if they get a couple of injuries but I think they'll do all-right. They'll start the season with a lot of confidence and I don't see them having too much difficulty fighting relegation."

On the move to Crystal Palace he said: "I couldn't have asked for much more than to come here. It's a massive club and I'm really pleased. It's going to be different for me, experiencing fighting at the top rather than the bottom. Hopefully we're going to be challenging for a top six or top 10 spot this season and the club is very ambitious.

"The chairman (Simon Jordan) is a winner and he wants the club in the Premiership. He feels that's where it belongs. They've got a great manager in Trevor Francis, great facilities, and the club is going places. My main aim is to get into the team and get a regular spot and play well."
