Barnard A Star! Says Coyne

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/08/2002

GRIMSBY keeper Danny Coyne says his fellow Welsh player Darren Barnard will be a star for Grimsby as he can score goals with either foot and knows exactly what he is doing on the pitch!!

In an interview with the Grimsby Telegraph he said: "I don't see any reason why he can't make a big impact. He's a very good player with a sweet left foot and he's a very experienced player to add to the squad. He'll be an asset to the club and he's got a good range of passing."

"He plays with a certain arrogance, which he takes onto the pitch and is a very, very confident player. "That's a good thing to have with you out there. He knows exactly what he is capable of."

"He will score goals from the left side and he can do that with either foot. I saw him score a goal last year in the Worthington Cup with his right foot. He's been a regular international squad player for every season since God knows when and rightly so. Plus it's nice to get a few more Welsh players in - we could do with a few more!"

He also said there is growing competition for places after the two new signings. "We don't know who's going to be left out yet and we'll probably find out on Friday. Everybody is working that little bit harder and there's competition for places now which is very healthy."

"I was shocked that Darren came in. Everything happened so quickly."
