Players Accept Deal!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 09/08/2002

THE Grimsby Telegraph today outlined the deal that the players have made with the club in regard to their bonus payments, which will be a near £400,000 cash reprieve for the club according to the report.

The squad have agreed to Peter Furneaux's pleas to wait for their appearance bonuses until the Mariners receive a £250,000 cash payment from Sky TV in April. They will then get their outstanding bonuses back-paid in full.

The Telegraph also said that "almost all of the players pick up £500 every time they play - though that is halved for some of the youngsters - but have agreed to wait to help out the cash-strapped club who have total debts of around £4-million."

"At 15 players per match over a 50-game season that equates to around £375,000 and the saving could release cash for manager Paul Groves to bring in more new faces."

"The deal was originally rejected by the players because they were unhappy at not being consulted about the proposal before the chairman went public with his cost-cutting intentions in May. But several clear-the-air meetings have helped resolve the situation and the players have agreed to help out."

But the players have already forgone last season's safety bonuses, which they will not receive after the collapse of ITV Digital, which represents thousands of pounds for some players.
