Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Groves Threatens to Quit!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 14/08/2002

AFTER all the upheaval of the summer at Blundell Park, there was a new twist after the draw with Wimbledon when Town boss Paul Groves threatened to quit over the barrage of abuse his family and the players' families had to take after the match last night.

The Grimsby player coach revealed to the Grimsby Telegraph: "People are taking out their frustrations with the situation on the players, and some of their families.

"That makes you consider everything that you do. Including me. There were a few people who suffered abuse. He followed this up by saying that the crowd were unfair to have a go at the boys that pull on the black and white striped shirt. "The lads have gone out there and, by the end, a lot of them are on their knees," said the Town boss, adding "nobody can ask any more than that."

Town Chairman Peter Furneaux said that he never heard the abuse and the fans should direct any complaints not at the team or Paul Groves, but at Carlton and Granada. "They let us down so badly," Mr Furneaux said.

"I am afraid the total amount of money which can be sustained at Grimsby Town Football Club does not pay for First Division football."

Another person who was also surprised with this outburst was the veteran chairman Of the Grimsby Town Supporters Club, Bernard Morley, who said: "We all react under pressure and say things we don't really mean. I wouldn't like to see him do that. I think he has got more about him. It must have been something said on the spur of the moment. People have got to give him a chance. I don't like booing, though. It is not right at all."
