Is football a business or a sport?

The Men In Black

AFTER watching the game against Portsmouth quite a lot of things came to my attention. This season is going to be the most important that most of us are ever going to see.

The main thing is the refereeing - why are they of such a poor standard when in theory it is the last rung of the ladder before the Premier League for most of them? I can guarantee when you pick your favourite paper up they don't mention the players who took part in the game, or what a good or poor game it was.

Instead it will be players and the two managers trying to fathom out where the referee got the silly decisions from. I know last season we had three Premiership referees (Graham Poll, David Ellery, and Steve Dunn), and they all handled the games so well that you never even knew they were there.

Take for instance Graham Poll. One day he's England's only representative for the World Cup - then he's brought down to earth with a bang by having to come to Cleethorpes on a wet and windy Saturday. We all know what a tough time refs get when they do the job they're paid for but why do some of them spend ninety minutes blowing the pea out of their whistle? In the end theirs is a job not many of you would want to do but the people who do it please let's try and get it right!
