Chapman Sued For Damages

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 15/09/2002

A HORRENDOUS tackle on fomer Iron player Peter Morrison by Grimsby's Scunthorpe-born Ben Chapman, who now plays for Third Division Boston United, is the subject of legal proceedings for compensation after Morrison's football career was finished.

The tackle by the Town defender left Morrison with a compound fracture of his left tibia in a reserve game between Scunthorpe and Grimsby Town at Glanford Park on Feb 14th 2001.

The match was abandoned as an ambulance came onto the pitch and many of Peter's team-mates were unable to continue. Chapman received a ban after being shown a straight red card for the `tackle`.

Morrison's recovery was hampered by a series of complications. The fracture wasn't healing and he had to have bone graft put in, which caught an infection and had to be removed and replaced with a nail. By the time he had a second bone graft and plate put in (Easter 2002) he had undergone six operations.

Although the legal action brought by Morrison is against Chapman, any money received would come from Grimsby Town's liability insurance.

"The tackle ended my career and my lawyer thinks I have a very good case, a lot of people have given evidence in my favour," explained Morrison today to the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph.

"I am now awaiting a response from Grimsby before things can move on any further."

Grimsby Town have not yet commented on the legal proceedings, and any statement on their behalf will be issued through their insurers
