Kiss of Death?

CHAIRMAN Peter Furneaux has hastened today to say that the board fully support Paul Groves despite the poor results so far. Normally one would suspect that this is the traditional "chairman's kiss of death" but it appears not to be the case.

Furneaux told the Grimsby Telegraph, "He's got the full backing of the board. We spotted him and gave him his chance and still see him as a very bright, determined person. He's still learning his job in a very difficult environment with very stringent cost controls. But he did a wonderful job for us last year and his job is not in danger".

"The cost-cutting measures are in place for the survival of the club and he understands that. I feel sorry for Paul because he got the job at a very critical time. But he realises the problems and what we can and can't do."

Furneaux says players will not be offloaded unless they can be replaced with even better players.

"If some of our high wage earners were on less money of course that would make it easier. That's obvious. But there is little chance of anyone taking those players and, if it would weaken the team, then we won't do it.

We don't want a confrontation. Nobody is going to give up a lucrative living because they know they've got to renegotiate at a lower rate."
