Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Sell The Club!

By: Glyn Atkinson
Date: 20/10/2002

WITH the dire financial situation facing Grimsby Town at the moment, has any serious thought been put forward to relinquishing control of the club to outside buyers, or a share issue so that anyone who has serious cash or a consortium behind them might secure the long term future of the club?

At the moment, not only does the future not look rosy, but there also seems to be little prospect of the club ever having the stadium needed to bring in custom over seven days, not maybe once or twice a fortnight on average.

One seems to remember a certain Italian once saying that he would be interested in buying into this club, with foreign backing behind him. He also seems to be at a loose end , with no further connection to Scottish football.

I'm sure that the fan base would welcome control from Tibetan monks if it meant that football was safe in future years for the Mariners.

Surely it must make better economic sense for those who have already invested loans into the club if there was a "bigger" power in control of their club, thus ensuring their cash injections.

I also don't think it unfair of those with large money sums sunk into the club to expect a reasonable return for the money that they have locked into this club for long periods of time.

".…Who is out there to be Grimsby's Elton??…."

The odds of a local lottery millionaire pay rolling the club is extremely slim, so we need to be looking at the self made millionaires from this area, eg Bernie Taupin, from Tealby, who wrote the lyrics for Elton John praising Grimsby, or Chris Wright , the Louth born backer of QPR.

Are these the only type of people who have the clout to put up the necessary money to save the club's future. Who is out there to be Grimsby's Elton??

How would Town fare if the club was advertised as up for open sale, with a fair price for buying out the current directors?

Do the directors consider these points worthy of debate??

Over to you !!
