Pollock Announces Retirement

By: Richard Lord
Date: 17/11/2002

JAMIE Pollock, who has been training with the Mariners in a bid to regain full fitness after almost two years out of the game, has retired at the age of 28, it was revealed in the Sports Telegraph.

The former Middlesborough and Manchester City midfielder has decided to call it a day after playing almost 400 games spanning 12 years.

Pollock said: "I always said I wanted to retire at 30 because the game has become so quick these days anyway. I knew I'd have to step aside and give the young kids a go."

Pollock had been playing in the reserves and training with the youth team for most of the season. He said: "I've really enjoyed my time at Grimsby and it's a cracking bunch of lads and there are some exciting young players coming through.

"The lads made me feel very welcome and I can't speak highly enough of them."

Pollock owns a glass toughening business, Polton Glass, which he has been running for five years and it is now worth in excess of £10m, but he revealed he doesn't want to quit football altogether.

He said: "I'm not dropping out of football completely and I'll take my coaching badges now. And, if the right job comes along at the right time in the future, then I'd definitely consider getting back into the game as a manager."
