Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Groves Moves To Extend Oster Loan!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 30/12/2002

Paul Groves is desperate to keep John Oster at Blundell Park despite his loan period coming to an end this week and will be talking to Sunderland in a bid to extend the loan.

Groves in an article on the Grimsby Telegraph said "Our top scorers are John Oster and Steve Kabba (previously on loan to Town) and we obviously want to keep John."

"We've now got to speak to the people that make those decisions at Sunderland and find out what they want to do. We'll also be asking whether he'll be allowed to play in the FA Cup. He's eligible in terms of time. It's just up to Sunderland.

"John's been no surprise to me. I've seen him play plenty of times and I knew what he was about. That goes back to the day that we took over when we wanted to bring him in but he got injured. "We're well aware of his quality and he's only proved us right."

"John has been out for a good spell and he came back and had a lift. Then he was at a level where he was coping with the first division and now he's reached another level."

"Whether it's a purple patch or whatever, he's showing his quality. We've spoken to John and we'll sit down this week and try and sort something out."

John McDermott told the Grimsby Telegraph "He's got five goals now and he's different class."

"One of the touches he took to lay it of to me was so good I could have stopped and applauded - but I had to get the ball. He's too good for this division. I want him to stay until the end of the season because he's a match winner. He can kill a game in the blink of an eye."

"If he can help us while he's here then that's brilliant. If he gets himself the reward of a move, then good luck to him. He's helped us tremendously so far and we've helped him."

With Aston Villa striker Boulding finally returning to full training last Friday it is likely that Groves will be making a move to sign him on loan this week. But at the moment, Oster appears to be his main priority.
