Bradley Allen Predicts Mariners Break Up!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/03/2003

EX-Town striker, Bradley Allen, has fired a warning salvo about Town's players who are out of contract in the Summer, saying many could consider quitting Blundell Park to avoid being left on the scrap heap.

Allen told Stuart Rowson of the Grimsby Telegraph that he believes that the squad will be disbanded if the club is relegated.

Town have 11 players out of contract in the summer but chairman Peter Furneaux has warned that no offers will be made until Town's fate is known and Allen thinks they may look for new clubs instead of risk being dumped like he was. (Allen was released by the Mariners last Summer saying that he was told he would be offered a new deal)

".…Relegation could see the team broken up!…."

"I can sympathise with the position that the club is in and my advice to the players would be to listen to what's out there. If it's possible to try and get something with another club, if Town aren't forthcoming with new terms, then they should," said Allen.

"The club are bottom and I understand their situation, but if the team go down, God forbid, what would happen then? Relegation could see the team broken up. Last season we only had one or two out of contract and we were able to move onward and upward in the run-in. But a lot of the players at the club now are uncertain about their future. There's nothing worse than that if you're a footballer."

".…expect less money and far shorter contracts!…."

"Over half of the Grimsby squad are out of contract at the end of the season and I know through my own experiences how difficult that is. The players must be wondering what's happening to them. That puts more pressure on them and if your team is struggling like Grimsby have been since Christmas, then it doesn't bode well. It won't make it any easier."

"I've got great sympathy with the players. Especially those that have played a number of games for the club and given great service."

But Allen also expects any players who do stay with Town will be offered less money and far shorter contracts.
