Watford Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 16/03/2003

HURRAY! A win at last - for only the second time in 2003 - but no matter, it's three points and Town move off the bottom. It was a true battling display from the Mighty Mariners and they got what they deserved.

Home > 2002-2003 Season > Report Cards > Watford (h)

Coyne: Made one good save in each half. Kicking was questionable at times but maybe that was down to the swirling wind. Kept a clean sheet.

Grade: B-

McDermott: Struggled to get going but soon settled in. He had a fairly quiet afternoon by all accounts but did a job.

Grade: C+

Gallimore: Liked to shout a lot at other Town players. He let the ball run out for a corner when he had plenty of time to clear it. Again, he was quiet but ultimately effective.

Grade: C+

Ford: He is slowly regaining some confidence by making the odd tackle to relieve the team of some pressure. Steady game at the back.

Grade: B-

Santos: As you would expect he won everything in the air and read the game well. His clearances are sometimes wayward but can't complain too much.

Grade: B

Oster: The creative spark from midfield, full of tricks and set up the winning goal. Good running off the ball and made life difficult for his marker.

Grade: B

Campbell: He had a better first half than second half and although he drifted out of the game he did cause a few problems to the Watford back line.

Grade: C+

Pouton: A very average 30 minutes from Pouton where he hustled and bustled but never really got anywhere.

Grade: C

Groves: Superb display from the manager in the centre of midfield where he challenged for every ball. He showed great technique to flick the ball home from Oster's cross.

Grade: B+

Hughes: A steady performance from the Pompey midfielder. Gave the ball away a bit in the first half but played better in the second half.

Grade: B-

Mansaram: His goals per game ratio might not be impressive, but his work rate is phenomenal. Created half chances for other players without really getting a sight of goal himself.

Grade: B

SUBS

Barnard: His deflected shot was unlucky to hit the post but he looked at home in a midfield where all they did was pass it. Held the ball up well and made a couple of late surging runs from midfield to assist Mansaram.

Grade: B-

Overall Conclusion: A vital three points for Town but they still have a lot of work to do. The system works well away from home but yesterday showed that it can be enough to pick up points at Blundell Park. Just expect tight games. The formation doesn't allow for plenty of goalmouth action but as the Watford players spilled forward in an attempt to save something from the game, it left gaps for Mansaram and the attacking midfielders to exploit and that was when Town looked at their best.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
