GRIMSBY Town's proposed new stadium is now doomed as the owner of the Great Coates site was refusing to release the land with a council officer saying the project would not go ahead.

The Grimsby Telegraph reported today that landowners Sutton Settled Estates refused to sign an agreement safeguarding the environment, which is part of the 106 agreement. therefore planning permission cannot be recommended at Friday's planning committee meeting.

Andy Gutherson, director of planning, told the Telegraph; "As a result of decisions outside the council's control, it appears at this particular moment in time the scheme is not going ahead."

Planning officers received a letter from the landowner saying it would not sign the 106-page agreement because developer Chiltern Investment Properties, believed the scheme was not viable.

The council have no other option but to recommend refusal of planning permission.

Chairman Peter Furneaux said: "We will be examining this and making a statement to shareholders this week."
