Is football a business or a sport?

Sayonara Mr Groves!

By: Graham Howes
Date: 08/05/2003

THERE is no doubt that Groves has had it tough. However my feelings are that he has not utilised what he has got effectively. At times his team selection and tactics have been very poor.

Substitutions have nearly bordered onto keystone cops, three stooges and Marx brothers comedy acts.Basically what we have witnessed this season was when the going got tough we clammed up and panicked. Other years we have drawn on strength, united and been defiant against the Fat Lady. I am afraid this year we gave up the ghost with little fight.

Now some startling facts about how bad 2002-3 has been. You make up your own mind if the big wedge of the boot should be planted on the rear of Mr Groves.

Statistically this season has been the 4th post war worst season on record. Only 47-48, 50-51, and 58-59 eclipsed it. You also have to consider these seasons played only 42 games.

In the whole of history of league football this has been the 9th worst on record. However due to amount of games its realistically 7th worst.

Again this has been the 4th worst post war record for conceding goals. Also this season has resulted in the 8th worst in town history in goals conceded.

The Full Records

Worst records (to make a comparison this season was worked on old 2pts)

Some seasons only had 22 and 30 matches and have been included but realistically cannot be classed as bad seasons.
