Who will win League 2?

Groves To Sign First New Face Today!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 09/06/2003

PAUL Groves was today poised to make his first major signing of the summer - with a Division One defender lined up for a Blundell Park switch. The player, believed to be a young centre back, was due to sign later today.

The Grimsby Telegraph report states that If the switch goes through it will be the manager's first step into the transfer market this summer - as he looks to meet the board's ambitious demand for 10 additional players before the start of pre-season training.

"We're speaking to a player today that we're hoping to secure. He's from a first division club and is a defender," said Groves. "We've spoken to a number of players and we're looking to progress with all of them. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting things tied up.

"We've managed to get through this one at a reasonable rate which has enabled us to sort him out. All being well it should be completed today."

"He's not a name but people in football will be aware of him. He's a younger player that's played a few games - including against us here last season. He's one for the future but he comes here looking to make a challenge to play in the first team."

"He will be looking to stake a claim and will bring competition. He's a new face to us, and isn't one that's been here on loan before or anything like that."

George Santos is still playing hard to get while Steve Chettle remains first reserve if the Frenchman opts to go elsewhere.

Confirmation: An official at the club clarified the remit that Paul Groves has. In answer to the question of whether the youngsters being signed are part of the 10 new players, he told the Fishy today: "The Manager is not restricted to the number of signings. Ten was the figure proposed to bring the squad to 20+, 25 being the optimum number. The number of actual signings will be determined by how the Manager utilises the resources made available, which includes the cost of all professionals."
