Is football a business or a sport?

The Martin Pringle Update

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 01/07/2003

AFTER Martin Pringle retired from football, he resigned himself to moving back to his homeland of Sweden and has settled with his family after the hurly burly of living in London. One problem he’s got is the lack of help from the insurance company he took his policy up with.

The company who cannot be named at the moment is run by Gary Stevens (Ex-Spurs and Brighton) and is prolonging Martin’s payout on his retirement by arguing over the small print of the policy that’s been sold to him.

Martin at the moment is £500,000 out of pocket due to the shortsightedness of the insurance company, and to help him in his cause has got help from the PFA (the player’s union). Their lawyers have sent letters to the insurance company involved asking for payment on this policy or the matter will be taken up in the courts. Another matter that’s arisen from all this is the insurance company has alleged that Martin was injured when he came to Blundell Park and both Grimsby Town and Charlton Athletic have refuted this suggestion on Martin's behalf.

On the footballing side Martin is currently helping a Swedish 2nd Division called Gais (which is just out side Gothenburg) side out by coaching their strikers but has just been put in charge of their reserve side. He has found it frustrating because one week they win 3-0 and then the next week they lose by the same amount - which is football anyway! Pringle says that his team lack the psychological side of game that he will get to the bottom of.

Another job Martin is interested in is helping his ex-agent acquiring some more clients in Sweden and taking over some players already on the books to help them with the less glossy side of their playing careers, which he find very interesting. So hopefully the downside which Martin is going through at the moment will be sorted soon and he can put all his energy into his coaching.
