Barnard Wales Call-Up

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 29/10/2003

DARREN Barnard has been called up for Wales' crucial play-off games against Russia in Moscow on November 15th, and at home in Cardiff four days later. It means Town's left back will miss the Mariners' fixture against Stockport at Blundell Park that day.

Although the former Barnsley defender is currently suffering from a foot injury, and may miss Grimsby's game with Rushden on Saturday, he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the Russia game, and Town's FA Cup match with QPR a week on Saturday.

Wales last reached the European finals in 1976. They have only played in one World Cup, reaching the quarter finals in 1958.

"These two games are possibly the most important in the history of Welsh football, as success will help to take the game in Wales to a higher level than ever before," said Wales manager Mark Hughes.

Former Grimsby 'keeper Danny Coyne, now at Leicester, is also named in the squad.

Wales squad: Paul Jones (Southampton), Mark Crossley (Fulham), Darren Ward (Nottingham Forest), Danny Coyne (Leicester); Darren Barnard (Grimsby), Mark Delaney (Aston Villa), Robert Edwards (Aston Villa), Daniel Gabbidon (Cardiff), Andrew Melville (Fulham), Robert Page (Sheffield United), Kit Symons (Crystal Palace), Adrian Williams (Reading); Simon Davies (Tottenham), Andy Johnson (West Bromwich Albion), Jason Koumas (West Bromwich Albion), John Oster (Sunderland), Mark Pembridge (Fulham), Carl Robinson (Portsmouth), Robbie Savage (Birmingham), Gary Speed (Newcastle), Paul Trollope (Northampton), David Vaughan (Crewe); Nathan Blake (Wolves), Robert Earnshaw (Cardiff), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United), John Hartson (Celtic), Gareth Taylor (Nottingham Forest), Neil Roberts (Wigan).
