Groves Talks About Jevons!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 02/11/2003

PAUL Groves has stated that Phil Jevons' performance in the reserves counts for nothing in the first-team reckoning but is pleased with his progress.

Many fans have been asking why Jevons, after turning out some good performances in the reserves, has not been given the opportunity to show what he can do in the first team.

But talking to Stuart Rowson from the Grimsby Telegraph, Groves puts it into perspective by saying; "All credit to Phil. He's in the Reserves, getting fit and he is scoring goals."

"People are finding it difficult to get in the first team at the moment."

"But to be honest, we expect the Reserves to win that league, full stop. They were second or third in it last year and the majority of the young ones are a year further on."

"They are playing against Reserve teams from third division clubs and we expect to beat them."

"If they're going to be up there, then they're going to be winning games, and to do that they have to score goals and make chances."

"But there is a gulf between the reserves and the first team. It's what you do when you get the chance in the first team that counts. Then you can build from there."

Barring injuries, it seems therefore that Jevons may to have to wait a bit longer before he gets his chance in the first team. He was however brought on as a substitute in the game against Rushdens on Saturday after sitting on the bench for the last few games without being called upon.
