Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

False Dawn!

By: Mertle
Date: 28/01/2004

IT says it all now! The Board seem to believe that sticking with Groves is an acceptable solution. The only thought which has come out, is to ask, well sort of, demand him to stop playing and concentrate on management only.

What false dawn the fans had, of a board flexing their muscle when after a meeting with Groves and our so-called messiah Mr "Downsize" Furneaux (we keep this club afloat attitude). The meeting weltered into degeneration for most fans with Furneaux whimpering to accept the situation that Groves stays Player/Manager.

The club looks to be in freefall and seems to have more infighting than a top of the bill boxing match with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis. We don't really know the truth why Cas suddenly decide to throw the kitchen sink spat and walk.

There been differing reports to how things went. You wonder who has got the finger on the pulse.

One thing is certain, it seemed the spark for a series of events. The board demanding the above, results and performances hit all time low and Pouton sold gives the indication, he could not wait to get out.

If any club looks prime for a self-destruct it's Grimsby. Pouton was sold for what turned out no more than the cost of him to lace his boots. Whichever camp you believe 30k or 22k is appalling return for a player who you spent 150k to get.. Turning a rough diamond into a better player, yet Furneaux had the gall to say this was good business.

He may have just come back from long-term injury and tends to self destruct at times, getting himself sent off. However no single person can deny when Pouton is on full throttle and his head screwed on gives Town the driving force in midfield.

Now we have the joke situation over Boulding over the talk of a 45k release, with more clubs queuing than Furneaux golf bag. It does not matter if it's a higher or any club. Whoever from the club agreed such a contract should be rounded up and shot at dawn.

We knew Boulding's potential when we re-signed him from Villa. After all we had his services before. If it was the only way Boulding/agent would deal we should have told him to walk. After all they were not exactly swamped with offers at the time.

It seems the board are planning for life in div3 already. Selling the family silver no doubt to recoup there oh how generous loans. No doubt got the swag bag ready to fill it up with other nice things before they scarper.

If they had any loyalty or remorse they would do everything in their power to turn the situation round. Firstly raise the funds to sack a manager who has been clueless to stop the slide before we had a half decent outfit before the selling started.

To have used their position to at least offer a deal to Boulding or any other player they wish to keep out of contract in the summer before it was free time. Even if that meant offering a contract at 50% reduction to the contract they are already on. It is appalling management to do nothing.

I ask a simple question. What price do we put on relegation if we lose Boulding, after losing Pouton and any other impending family silver.

Show the fans you do care and solve the problems.
