Boulding And Rankin Moves - The Details

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/02/2004

MICHAEL Boulding has signed for Barnsley for an undisclosed fee (sources say it was £50,000) - with Isaiah Rankin heading in the other direction on a month's loan.

It is not clear if this was cash/swop deal but it was Boulding who asked Town to invoke the clause in his contract that allows him to leave the club if another club is prepared to offer above £45,000.

Town really had no choice as Boulding could leave on a free in the summer.

Barnsley manager Gudjon Thordarson said: "Michael completed his agreement with Grimsby and we are now to discuss personal terms - we are completing them now."

"We're very pleased to have finally got him here. It's another good deal for the club."

"Isaiah Rankin will be going the other way for a month on loan as part of the agreement, but Boulding is a permanent signing on a two-year contract."

Rankin's Profile

Isaiah Rankin was Nigel Spackman's first signing in January 2001. A former Arsenal trainee, Isaiah moved to Valley Parade in August 1998 for a fee of £1.3 million.

He created a Bantam's record when he became the first City player to score in a European competitive match - against Atlantas in the Inter-Toto Cup at the start of the 2000/01 season.

He spent three months on loan at Bolton Wanderers between August and November 2000. He scored twice in nine starts for the Trotters - against West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End.

He scored his first goal for the club against Tranmere Rovers - a last minute winner that cost John Aldridge his job. Missed the final games of the 2000/01 season with a hernia problem that required surgery.

He has made 23 first team appearances for Barnsley , scoring four goals.
