Who will win League 2?

The Cost of Relegation

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/05/2004

THE Mariners are already counting the cost of relation to Division Three, which Grimsby Town chairman Peter Furneaux has revealed will be in the region of £500,000.

With the club already suffering from the previous season's relegation, and not yet over the ITV Digital collapse, it's a another financial body blow for the Mariners, who are still heavily in debt.

"It has been a disastrous two seasons and we have got to arrest this decline," Peter Furneaux told Mariners Net.

"We can't keep going down, but we don't want anybody to think the directors don't care. The fans, the management and the directors deserve better than they have been getting."

The Town chairman also revealed that Grimsby now have only half a dozen players still under contract, and a manager who is out of contract and unlikely to be offered a new one. Nicky Law was brought in to avoid a second relegation on the spin and ultimately failed.

The Town chairman also plead for fans and local businesses to support the club in their hour of darkest need: "To maintain the football club in Grimsby and keep people wanting to invest, it needs to be a joint effort. We have got to have everyone's support," warned Furneaux.

With no manager, hardly any players and very little money the immediate future looks bleak for the Mariners.
