Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Grimsby 1 Northampton 2

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/01/2005

GRIMSBY'S recent unbeaten run came to an end this evening at Blundell Park against the division's form team Northampton, with the visitors coming from behind to record a 2-1 victory. Substitute Ashley Sestanovich also received a red card for dissent within 5 minutes of arriving on the pitch.

Town dominated the first half and went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead. Following a corner, Michael Reddy glanced the ball into the net from a Jason Crowe flick on. Reddy in particular was rampant and should have put Town 2-0 up following a great run into the box, but his final shot was feeble.

As with many other games this season the Mariners emerged from the half time interval barely recognisable from the team which had gone into it. The wind was against them, and Northampton made two substitutions at the start of the second half, both of which were contributing factors.

The Cobblers leveled the game early in the second half when Williams could only parry a Benjamin shot, and McLeish was quicker to react to the rebound than Grimsby's defence. Within five minutes Northampton had turned the game around when Benjamin, on loan from Leicester, scored with a free header.

Grimsby never looked like getting back into the game, and Sestanovich received his marching orders for foul and abusive language towards the referee. The incident followed a decision by the referee to award a free kick to Northampton after Michael Reddy went down in the box.

A full report will appear later.
