Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Harrold: Chances
Harrold: Chances

Grimsby 0 Rushden 0

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/03/2005

TOWN failed to break down a dogged Rushden side who came looking for a point and got it. The Mariners had enough chances to win the game, but failed to make the most of their opportunities. Rushden almost snatched the game in injury time when they hit the post with their only attempt on goal.

Ronnie Bull failed a late fitness test, meaning Jason Crowe started the game out of position at left back. Terry Fleming and Stacy Coldicott returned in midfield, with Michael Reddy missing out following an incident in training yesterday.

As they did in the game at Blundell Park last year, Rushden set their stall out to stop Town playing, so there were few chances in the opening period, in which Grimsby had most of the possession.

Town had a trio of first half chances, all of which produced good saves from the Rushden 'keeper Shearer. Firstly a Harrold shot from a Gritton header down was saved. Then the 'keeper smothered the ball when Gritton was put through by Harrold. Finally the on-loan Brentford striker, who always looked a danger, volleyed the ball superbly from a Pinault cross, only to see Shearer tip it away.

Town continued to create the better chances after the break when a Harrold shot was again saved. The Mariners were again frustrated when a Fleming header produced another great save from Shearer

With the game heading for a goalless draw Whittle conceded a free kick deep in injury time on the edge of the area, from which Rushden hit the post. A Diamonds win would have been harsh though on Grimsby, who dominated the game but failed to convert their chances.

The point is another nail in the coffin for Grimsby's promotion hopes, but gives Rushden a valuable point in their fight against a second successive relegation - something with which Town's fans are only too familiar.

A full report will appear later.
