A Long Way To Go Yet - Slade

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 23/07/2005

RUSSELL Slade has made it clear that he has not yet picked the first team squad. "I am still a bit away from getting my first 11. There is still a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and August 6. There are places up for grabs."

After the Rotherham games Slade said; "We probably deserved the equaliser, we even had one cleared off the line ourselves. "We were better in the second half. It was competitive, it was a good workout. There were one or two good individual performances."

"I have been delighted with Tom Newey's form, he has been the pick of the players this pre-season. He has taken to the role of wing-back like a duck to water. I am delighted with him really. He has not played that role throughout his career really. He has played as left winger, left midfielder and left back. "He has played that role more now since he arrived than he has done in the rest of his career."

"I thought Jean-Paul Kamudimba did well. He wants to get the ball and he wants to pass the ball. It was his great strike we got the goal from. He will be very important. We want someone who can be comfortable on the ball."

"We are ahead of schedule with fitness preparation. We finished perhaps the stronger, even though we had made so many changes. We need to keep that going."
