Russell Slade is Trialing Two New Players.

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 08/11/2005

RUSSELL Slade is looking at two players today. One is former Bury, Wycombe & Reading striker Bas Savage who recently had trials with Coventry City.

Savage has been described as big, awkward, and unorthodox and causes problems for defenders.

Mohammed Basir ("Bas") Savage

Stylish forward who played for Reading's reserves on trial in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City on 23/1/2002, and after one more reserve trial game signed a contract on 7/2/2002.

He was previously at Walton & Hersham, having come through their youth and reserve teams to make his first team debut there at the end of the 2000/01 season.

His transfer fee was £25,000 down, a further £20,000 after four League games, plus a 15% sell-on fee, and a promise of visit by Reading to Walton & Hersham for a friendly match in 2002 (which actually took place in August 2003!).

After several reserve appearances, Bas was a non-playing substitute in the League draw away to Tranmere Rovers on 7/4/2002 and then scored his first goal for Reading in the reserve game away to Bristol Rovers on 17/4/2002.

He made his Football League debut in the promotion-winning 1-1 draw away to Brentford on the last day of the 2001/02 season, coming on as a substitute in second-half injury-time.

In the pre-season tour of Germany in 2002, Bas picked up a serious injury and had to miss the whole of the 2002/03 season. He was back for pre-season in 2003/04, playing in first team friendlies.

Town are also looking at Newcastle full-back Kris Gate. The young full-back is said to be a player who loves to get forward and create problems for the opposition's defence.

He has lightning pace and his eye-catching performances for the Magpies second-string earned him a first-team squad place.

Both will train with the Mariners today.
