Beat the Bookies: Week 24

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/01/2006

LAST weekend was almost bereft of genuine cup upsets. There were a few draws, but unfortunately Beat the Bookies' tip of Arsenal v Cardiff was not one of them!

It seems an eternity since Town's last game, an unfortunate defeat at home to in-form Carlisle, since when the Mariners have slipped down to third place. The prospect of a makeshift defence at home to Mansfield on Saturday does not make bet365.com's 8/11 for a home win look especially attractive. Mansfield have struggled this season in the league, but have put together a few surprise results this season including a win at Oxford on New Year's Eve. The Stags are 10/3 with bet365.com. I'd plump for a home win at those odds only with the established back four.

One market worth contemplating is the first goal scorer. With JPK in Egypt with the Simbas in the African Nations, the mantle of penalty taker is probably still in the hands of Tom Newey, despite his miss last week against Carlisle. bet365.com have Newey at 20/1 to score the first goal, or 5/1 to score during the game. Not bad considering he also takes most free kicks, although to be fair his scoring record has been moderate so far this season.

Carlisle are the division's form horse at the moment, however. and the Cumbrians this week head off to Shrewsbury. The Shrews have only lost once at home this season, but Carlisle are flying right now and could prove too strong for the Shropshire club. bet365.com rate a Carlisle win 7/5, which is this week's tip.
