Beat the Bookies: Week 23

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/01/2006

HULL were well beaten by Leeds last weekend supposedly, but fortunately there's always plenty of opportunities to try and beat the bookies!

With the Mariners out of the FA Cup and not playing this weekend it gives us an opportunity to enjoy the FA Cup 3rd Round without the tension of being involved. Regular readers of this column will know I always try and find upsets, especially where the bookies look at reputations rather than form, and this week will be no different!

First of all the really big upsets! Cardiff surely have only a slim chance of winning at Arsenal, but is 16/1 with bet365.com a bit generous to see a mid-table Championship side beat an Arsenal team past their best?

Then there's 25/1 for Huddersfield to win at Chelsea, 10/1 for Scunthorpe to win at Man City, 33/1 Burton Albion to beat Man Utd. All odds with bet365.com. None of them look especially likely, however.

Slightly more realistic upsets are last week's tip Hull City to beat Aston Villa at home which is 10/3, with bet365.com, although Villa have picked up in recent games. Leeds to win at Wigan is 10/3 with bet365.com, and also a good price as Leeds are flying at the moment, whereas Wigan blow hot and cold.

Finally what about Graham Souness finally getting the boot if Mansfield beat the Geordies at St James's Park? bet365.com are offering 12/1 for such an eventuality, which to my mind is poor odds compared to a Cardiff (two divisions higher than Mansfield) victory at Highbury.

I'm going to stick my neck out and go for a big upset! I was going to bet on Hull but I've talked myself into going with Cardiff to pull off possibly the shock of the round with either a win or a draw at Arsenal, which is available at 9/2 with bet365.com!

RECOMMENDED BET OF THE WEEK:
Cardiff to draw with or beat Arsenal
