Fans Back New Slade Contract

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/02/2006

THE overwhelming majority of Grimsby fans would like to see Grimsby Town manager Russell Slade awarded a new contract immediately according to a exclusive poll conducted by The Fishy.

Despite many supporters having reservations about the team's style of play under Slade, most are prepared to overlook this and give the nod to a new contract for the former teacher, who has guided the Mariners to the upper echelons of League Two during his second season in charge.

Town Chairman John Fenty appears to agree, as earlier this month news emerged that the GTFC Board were likely to offer Slade a two or three year deal, to be signed by the end of February - long before an automatic promotion place, or even a play-off position, has been secured.

Russell Slade, whose contract at Blundell Park ends in the summer, has been linked in the press with several managerial vacancies in the Coca Cola League, including at one time the managerial position at Bristol City, which has since been filled.

We asked in our Question of the Week: Should Russell Slade be given a new contract now? 63% of those fans who responded believed Slade should be given a new deal straight away, with only 29% having the opinion that he should not. The remaining 8% were undecided. Over 200 supporters partcipated in the survey.

Speaking recently of his achievements since arriving at Blundell Park in the summer of 2004, Slade said: "I only had four professional players when I first came here. When I arrived at Grimsby I promised the Chairman I would build a side that was better than the one I took over and I think I have done that."
