Cheltenham Match Ratings

By: Jake Olley
Date: 29/05/2006

THE only team who were at the races on Sunday was Cheltenham. Many of Town's players had one eye on the beach and a few no doubt will be shown the door, but who?

Mildenhall On the day where it was vital for the players to turn up and be counted only Mildy and Parky were at the races. Mildy, who in previous weeks looked shaky, kept Town in the match with several quality saves. Firstly he denied both Gillespie and Gunian with top saves before pulling off a save of the highest quality to deny Grant McCann from the spot. Another top display from Mildy but I am 90% sure it will be his last 9.

Croft A okay display from Crofty who I thought was the wrong player to substitute when Slade decided to bring Goodfellow on. He got up and down the wing well and dealt with his man professionally. Not bad but not good. 7

Newey Looked a little relaxed at times which almost let Cheltenham in for a easy goal if it hadn't been for poor finishing and a lack of quality. Apart from this his performance was of an average standard for maybe a game like Barnet at home but not a play-off final in front of 30,000 people. I feel Newey has the talent but just never seems bothered. This is a play off final Tom - not a practice match. 6

Rob Jones A sad end to a terrific season for Rob. He battled hard all year and deserved his player of the year award but when it mattered he didn't look himself and allowed the Robins in twice within fifteen minutes which they should have converted. As the game went on he settled slightly but in this game it was more of the Rob Jones whom we saw in his first season at Blundell Park, which is disappointing. 6

Whittle Was steady at the back and dealt with Cheltenham’s physical presence well. Justin has had a good season despite his doubters and was steady when it mattered. 7

Mendes No quality, no effort and certainly no chance of a goal. For me the fact that he had to change his fancy boots on a slippery service summed up Junior’s performance today. I backed him to prove the critics wrong at Cardiff and to bag the winner but there was certainly no chance of that. For me that fact he also walked off the pitch with score at 1-0 so he could be applauded shows his lack of commitment. Top of the redundant list for me. 4

Parkinson A very good display by Parky who always seems to turn it on when needed. He jetted down the wing and always looked dangerous when cutting inside. Parky will always be remembered for the penalty that wasn't which in many Town fans eyes cost us the chance of a trip to the City Ground. A top display which I hope means he'll stay though I feel it is very unlikely. 8

Bolland Had one half chance towards the end of the first half which he sliced into the Cheltenham fans' laps. Bolly got forward well and grafted which he has done all season. It was another typical Bolly display today and I hope we will see many more next season. 7

Woodhouse Did nothing really much to note today and looked as if his mind was already on his first bout. He went down in a great area to appeal for a penalty he was never going to get as well as hitting a shot into the second tier of the stand behind the goal. Thought he shouldn't have even been on the pitch as he hurled down a Cheltenham forward with the goal gaping only for Mildenhall to pull off a top save from the resulting penalty. A fond farewell but just feel he could have done more in his last ever game. 5

G.Jones Not even a Mike Dean red card could stop ‘Lumpaldinho’ playing in this game and he nearly sent the game into extra time with a diving header which was fantastically stopped by Higgs to the amazement of the Town faithful. He battled and I think will stay on for next season though only time will tell. 7

Reddy Came off after 30 minutes though he failed to cause any problems for the Cheltenham defence early on which was disappointing though I do hope we will see him next season and would urge Town to take up his extra year option and not to accept any bid below a quarter of a million pounds. 6

Subs:

Cohen Played for an hour though caused minimal problems throughout. He tested Higgs with a decent strike though the Robins' keeper saved well. 6

Futcher Won a few headers though didn't give any real threat. 5

Goodfellow Did very little though threatened slightly in the box at the end. N/A
