Robbed by the Posh!

By: Robert Salt
Date: 25/03/2007

PETERBOROUGH United were the visitors this afternoon at Blundell Park in a game in which Town dominated from start to finish. Posh had only two chances in the game and scored from them both to realistically end Town’s faint hopes of the play-off’s.

Grimsby Town started with a 4-5-1 formation again with Danny North being the lone striker. There was a change though on the right wing with Peter Till starting at the expense of the injured Peter Bore.

In the Peterborough line at centre back was former player Ben Futcher making his first return to Blundell Park since leaving for the Posh earlier this season.

Town kicked off and from the start were the better team, however they struggled to create any real chances with both defences on top of a which game was mainly contested in centre midfield.

It wasn't until the 23rd minute that the first decent chance of the game came along. Good work in the Town midfield saw a break from Danny North and with three town players against two Peterborough players North opted to shoot from just inside the area, the ball flying over the bar. With Toner screaming for the ball and completely unmarked on the left, it surely looked to have been the better option.

Town still continued to dominate but the final ball or pass when in or around the Posh penalty area was letting Town down badly. However a good move involving Toner and loan signing Hunt opened up a chance for Paul Bolland, and whose placed shot fly just wide of the right post.

Not long afterwards a run from Toner saw him cut in from the left but his on-target effort deflected off a Peterborough defender to result in a Town corner.

The first half drew to an end with Town being the better team without the goal that their play deserved.

At the beginning of the second half Town remained unchanged. However seconds into it Nick Fenton badly controlled a pass which allowed Boyd a run on goal to score, which was the Peterborough’s first chance on goal.

Town still continued to play and looked the better team. However Peterborough were closing the Town players down a lot quicker than in the first half and not allowing them any time on the ball.

Danny North had a close range effort sail wide just before he ran onto a through ball and power in a half volley that the Peterborough keeper could only parry and claim at the second attempt.

Town had replaced Nick Fenton with Simon Grand, Danny Boshell for Gary Jones and Peter Till for Andy Taylor, this meant a switch to the right wing for Danny North.

Straight away North was involved with a run down the right and crossed for the advancing Gary Jones who from a tight angle could only shoot into the side netting with half the Town fans thinking we had scored.

However Peterborough killed the game off with their second goal and chance of the game, a needless free kick was given away by Simon Grand, and from the resulting free kick the ball was headed in by White due to poor defending from Town.

Overall Town’s performance was good, the final ball and pass let them down at times. Had one of the first half chances gone in it probably would have been a different story. It just was of those games where it wasn't our day !

MOM: Whittle, excellent display, must keep him for next season!
