Buckley Pleased With Win

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/12/2007

ALAN Buckley was relieved that Grimsby had managed to take one of their chances against Mansfield on Saturday. Gary Jones was once again the hero as Grimsby recorded their second consecutive win to lift themselves away from the bottom two.

"I thought we deserved it. We started really well and at a high tempo. We pressed well and, to be honest, after 25 minutes I was disappointed we hadn't wrapped the game up.

"Bolly had a good chance, as did Northy. With steadier finishing we could have had quite a comfortable afternoon. But the goal we did score was worthy of winning any match. The play leading up to it and the diving header from Gary Jones were fantastic.

"With the score only at 1-0 you are always hanging on a little bit and you start to fear the worst. But we controlled it and they never really got a clear look at our goal. We defended quite well. It is pleasing for the fans, especially after the last home game."

Grimsby's next game is a much sterner test when they travel to bogey side Stockport on Saturday for the first of a busy period of games over the festive season. Town have narrowly won two games against two out of form opponents, but now once again face a team in the top half of the table.
