A Newell Dawn for Grimsby

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/10/2008

FORMER Luton and Hartlepool manager Mike Newell has been confirmed as Grimsby's new manager. The 43-year-old Liverpudlian will take over from Stuart Watkiss on Wednesday, after the Scunthorpe game.

Newell has been out of work since he was sacked by the Hatters in March 2007, and has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with the club.

"The directors are delighted with this appointment of this forward-thinking manager," said Grimsby chairman John Fenty. "It is now hoped that the fans and everybody associated with the club all get behind him."

Striker Mike Newell won the league with Blackburn, and also played in the top flight for Everton and Leicester. He has guided both Hartlepool and Luton to promotion in his managerial career. Newell is remembered for causing a huge stir in the footballing world when he claimed two years ago that corruption was rife in transfer deals.

Grim Rob Says: Newell looks like a good appointment, the first manager since Lennie Lawrence with a recent proven track record in the Football League, and he is well known and respected in the game. Although he will not have been cheap, it has probably been no coincidence that a succession of inferior managers (Russell Slade excepted) have coincided with Town's recent slide down the divisions. Hopefully the Grimsby public will respond with increased attendances at home games.
