BARNSLEY defender Jacob Butterfield has begun training with the Mariners with a view to joining fellow Type Rob Atkinson on loan from Oakwell as Mike Newell looks to bolsten his defence.
Reds manager Simon Davey told the Barnsley OS: "Jacob will go to Grimsby and train this week. He could join them on loan"
The 18-year-old full back has made three appearances for the South Yorkshire side, and has been described by Davey as a star of the future. The Bradford-born defender made his debut for Barnsley in a Carling Cup tie against Newcastle United in August 2007 coming on as a substitute for Martin Devaney during a 2-0 loss.
