Grimsby v Aldershot Preview

THE Mariners are confident again the change of the seasons has brightened us all up a following a resounding thumping of Gillingham in front of one of the biggest crowds for years. It has left everyone involved looking at the possibility of safety from this terrible situation.
As we all know it’s about taking it a game at a time and with another packed house in store the Mariners play Aldershot, a team who know all about the end of their league status and much more.
So 3-0, another false dawn? Another teasing, tantalising look at what this team could be? Whatever might happen on Saturday last week with the addition of Sweeney and Conlon the Town team we know popped and bristled with purpose and vigour and for the first time in over a year the team looked to put in a full 90 minutes' performance on in which they looked in control and had everything in hand like they for once had a plan. Whether it was the very good heave ho of the Sheffield Three or the inclusion of the West Yorkshire Three, or whether it was you screaming "Mariners!!" at the top of your lungs it all helped. All we need is Dave Boylen and his megaphone - 1 2 3 Wahey!
Their History...
Created in 1992 from the ashes and twitching remains of Aldershot F.C. the southern outfit was there to fill the gap after the tragic end of the aforementioned club set up in 1926. The club was one of the founder clubs of the old Fourth Division in 1932. From then on, debt ridden and lame, Aldershot were taken to pasture, to the sadness of many, but like every club and like every supporter they don't let it die and they try anything to make their love for their club continue and as a result. Ta Da! Aldershot Town F.C Est. 1992. They have a very nice badge, a tiny little ground falling to pieces at the seams, but it holds one hell of an atmosphere.
Last Season Was...
They did it! Promotion was achieved since their creation over 15 years ago all the way through those 5 divisions that separate them from league football status, from the days when they started in the Isthmain League going to clubs that barely attracted a few 100 fans now all that hard work has come to fruition and they are not going anywhere!
This Season Is...
About pushing on of course who would want to rest after tasting success. Though they are looking over their shoulder at us down here in the cheap seats, two more wins and that will be safety for another year. With a little bit more dosh and a little more time to mould an already impressive team into something more the club have a chance as do we all but so far so good.
Grimsby Town To Them is...
A sleeping midget who use to fit in Division One like comfy old slippers who one day you listen to the final score and look at the league table and you think to yourself "Where have they gone?" You slipped down the leagues without a murmur in these neck of the woods. One day you were top of the Division next you're down here with us mere mortals. Two tier stands a bar in the ground, police escorts, segregation, and a huge away end. With these old memories of bigger and better things you're really spoiling us.
They're Most Proud Of...
Not letting it die. We lost the battle all those years ago and it still hurts a little sometimes it feels like a second marriage just not quite good enough as old that somehow you should of made it work and whatever happens those memories won't go. Whatever happened though we won we worked bloody hard we raised money we worked at it and the promotion was sheer brilliance who couldn't be proud of what has been achieved so far?
The Future Is...
Like everyone else in this league it’s either bright or desperate. We're so glad we're here but let’s not take it for granted let's push on we have the chance to attract more fans. The likes of Guilford and Bracknell look to the big smoke for teams, maybe some will look here instead if we can keep this going.
Their Key Player Is...
20 year old Jimmy Ryan is on a right little hot streak - 3 goals from the last 4 matches takes the former Shrewsbury’s midfielder total to 10 this year. A quick intelligent player he played in the 3-1 defeat just after Christmas proving a menace to Bennett and co. With a little bit of form behind him he needs to make sure to keep him locked away and keep this confidence in Town going!
Prediction...
It has to be done who would of thought how comfortable we looked last week and with Sweeney and Conlon having another week to mould and get to know the players it has to be another win in a packed house!
Grimsby Town 3-1 Aldershot
