Town Draw With Leeds

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/07/2009

MIKE Newell was happy with his side's performance in the 1-1 draw with Leeds at Blundell Park last night. The Mariners raced into an early lead through Akpro, and then had a number of good chances to add to their goal tally.

After the break Leeds came back through Becchio and scored an equaliser soon after half time after a poor clearance by substitute 'keeper Overton.

Overall the Town team more than matched their opponents, who will start the season as one of the most fancied teams to win the division above League Two.

Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "I was really pleased - the first half in particular - we created chances and we were the better team.

"We can accept them coming back into it in the second half as they weren't too happy at half-time, so yes I was pleased with the team.

"We had four or five really good chances in the first half and I'm sure they got a bit of a roasting at half-time and they came out and competed second half.

"We are not expecting to be the finished article right now as there is a long way to go in terms of fitness, but I am happy with the squad at the moment."
