Woods: I Want the Job

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/10/2009

CARETAKER boss Neil Woods has aspirations to do the job for longer than just the handful of games that he has been given. In an interview with the Grimsby Telegraph, Woods said: "I've been a Youth coach for several years and maybe it's time for me to have a go."

Woods continued: "There's been no time scale set and equally no promises that there will be a job on offer at the end of my caretaker role - that depends on which direction the Board want to go in.

"It may work out, it may not but at least I'll be able to look back and say I had a go.

"I would only regret it if I didn't because it's a fantastic job to manage Grimsby Town."

Woods came to the club as a striker in 1990 under then boss Alan Buckley and has been either a player or a coach at Blundell Park ever since, but never in a public-facing role.

The softly-spoken Yorkshireman, who has guided the youth team to several trophies is looking forward to the challenge of working with older players. "It's a chance for me to further my ability and I'm keen to see if I can deal with coaching senior players and the different problems that arise with that role," said Woods.

Other former Mariners linked with the job are John McDermott, ex-boss Paul Groves, and former coach Paul Wilkinson. Former Tiger Dean Windass has also applied for the job.

England Ladies' Coach Hope Powell has not applied for the job, despite widespread reports in the national press.

Grim Rob Says I'd give Woodsy the two league games at Bournemouth and against Accrington at home, and the two cup games, one of which is at Leeds. Then I'd take it from there.
