Slade Available Again

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/11/2009

FORMER Grimsby manager Russell Slade has been sacked by Brighton after a poor start to the season. Slade saved Brighton for a near certain relegation last season with a run of wins at the end of the campaign, but the Seagulls have failed to recapture their form after the summer break.

With Brighton now back in the relegation zone, the board have lost patience with Slade. It is though timely for Grimsby, who are still looking for a new manager. Slade is the only person in the last decade to have any success with Grimsby, and came within a minute of gaining automatic promotion to League One in 2006.

Slade was to leave under controversial circumstances to Yeovil, where he had considerable success and took the Glovers to the play-offs before eventually succumbing to the manager's curse - a poor run of results and the inevitable sack.

Slade will inevitably now be seen as a leading contender for any job in the bottom two divisions, including Grimsby and Tranmere. He was snapped up by Brighton just days after Yeovil sacked him earlier thus year.

Grim Rob Says: It's certainly worth sounding out Russell Slade to see if he is willing to return to Blundell Park. His failure to sign a new contract did not reflect well on him or the board at the time, but it's water under the bridge now. His team was the best Grimsby team since we've been in League Two by a country mile, which is the most important thing.
