Fenty: Woods Safe For Now

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/03/2010

TOWN chairman John Fenty has dismissed speculation that Grimsby manager Neil Woods is to be given the sack. Mr Fenty told an online fans forum: "I think it's reasonable to face facts. Neil inherited a team that was shipping goals, devoid of confidence and at times were accused of being unfit."

The Town chairman added: "Since then we have seen improvements and I believe a win is around the corner and we will then turn good draws and performances into a few wins and should reach safety before the end of the season".

Fenty believes that the majority of Grimsby supporters still back their manager, who took over from Mike Newell in the autumn and have yet to win a game over 4 months later.

"I believe only a minority of fans think the manager should be changed," then adding: "It might be considered foolish to make yet another change in management when real progress is being made."

Fenty has sacked the last three Grimsby managers all of whom had a long time remaining on their contracts and Town have still not reached a settlement with previous manager Mike Newell over compensation.

Grim Rob Says I didn't agree with the appointment of Woods in the first place. I felt it was too risky an appointment given the situation we were in at the time. However it's arguably too late for anyone else to have much of an impact with just a handful of games to go, so part of me thinks we might as stick with Neil Woods and hope that somehow Town can string a few wins together. On the other hand if Woods did leave I wouldn't exactly be gutted.
