Town Defeat Histon

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/08/2010

GRIMSBY won their first home game of the season, coming from behind to defeat minnows Histon with Connell scoring both Grimsby's goals. The first was a controversial penalty to level the match before half time. Histon then sealed the points with a well taken volley with six minutes to go.

Neil Woods decided to start with goalkeeping coach Steve Croudson between the sticks. The other change was striker Charles Ademeno's first start of the season, partnering skipper Lee Peacock up front.

Town had the best of the early play, with Connell going close with a shot from 20 yards out. But it was the visitors, with around 15 supporters to cheer them on, who took the lead against the run of play. The ball was crossed to Wootton in space who composed himself and found the net past Croudson.

As happened against Hayes, the goal shell shocked Town, and they needed Croudson to spare them further woe a few minutes later when he got down to block a shot from Riza.

The Mariners got the break they needed to get back into the game when the ref awarded a penalty for a challenge on Gobern, which looked generous. Conell made no mistake from the spot.

Ademeno then limped off shortly before half time, to be replaced by Eagle, a blow for Town's hopes of playing their best side against Luton next weekend.

After the break the game looked like ending in a stalemate. Town were unable to penetrate Histon's defence, and the visitors looked dangerous on the break with their pace up front.

But with six minutes to go Peacock beat his man and crossed to Connell, who volleyed the ball in past the 'keeper. The Histon players appealed in vain that Peacock had taken the ball into touch.

Town had to withstand a late Histon charge, including a late corner which their 'keeper came up for.
