GRIMSBY defeated the second in-form Welsh side in a week after a brace from prolific striker Alan Connell was enough to see off Newport County. Connell had earlier this week scored the winning goal to dispatch Wrexham.

Neil Woods made just one change to the side which defeated the Red Dragons, bringing in central defender Scott Garner for the injured Steven Watt.

After a fairly even opening period, Town took the lead after a run from deep within his own half by right winger Peter Bore saw him cut inside and set up Connell. The former Bournemouth striker struck the ball first time, leaving the 'keeper with no chance.

The lead boosted Town's confidence and they could have gone on to get more in the remainder of the first half.

Soon after the break Connell doubled Town's lead, this time with a poacher's goal. Connell was quickest to get to a loose ball in the box and prodded it in from close range.

Grimsby thoroughly deserved their lead, and went on to win the game.
