Town Salvage Point

GRIMSBY salvaged what at one stage looked an unlikely point at Southport, coming back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw, and could have even won the game. The turning point was when Southport's Shaun Whalley was sent off for a reckless challenge on Alan Connell.

New signing Bryan Hughes started for the Mariners in midfield, and Grimsby's other new boy Rob Duffy started his second game foe the Mariners up front.

Southport made the perfect start when new signing Shaun Whalley curled the ball into the top corner from 30 yards on 7 minutes. It was a stunning goal which knocked the proverbial stuffing out of Town.

Southport went on to totally dominate the first half hour and went further ahead from a corner when Davis was left completely unmarked in the six yard box on 30. It could have been more but for Kenny Arthur in Town's goal.

Town improved slightly in the first part of the second half, but got a massive boost when Whalley was sent off for a wild two-footed tackle on Connell with 20 minutes to go.

Almost immediately Town won two corners and Duffy popped up in the six yard box to head the second home.

With 5 minutes to go Rob Atkinson got on the end of a long Cummins free kick and levelled the game, something which had looked extremely unlikely a few minutes ago.

On the stroke of full time Cummins received a second yellow, and both sides played out the last few minutes of injury time probably grateful for a point..
