Grimsby v Fleetwood Team News

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/08/2011

GRIMSBY take on Fleetwood on Saturday in the opening game of the season, in what should prove an important pointer as to where Town stand in relation to one of the better sides in the league.

The Cod Army have spent heavily over the last year and are widely tipped to "do a Crawley" this season. The bookies make them second favourites to Luton to win the league and most people fancy Fleetwood and Luton as the two teams most likely to go up.

Grimsby's side for the opening game is anyone's guess but one certainty is that most of the starting XI will be making their debuts, with nine players having been secured during the summer and numerous permutations tried out in the pre-season games.

One player who won't be starting the game is midfielder Church (back), who has missed the last two weeks of pre-season and is still a few days away from a return.

Shaun Pearson (hamstring), Darran Kempson (toe) and Damian Spencer (back) have all overcome their niggles.

Fleetwood's starting line-up is as much in doubt as Grimsby's. However ex-Town defender Rob Atkinson looks likely to start.

Fleetwood won the corresponding fixture last season at Blundell Park. However Town did win their opener at Crawley a year ago, only to end around 40 points behind the eventual champions.
