Town Through in FA Trophy

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/01/2012

GRIMSBY continued their run of good form in a break from League action in the FA Trophy. The Mariners easily won their second Second Round against Ryman Premier League leaders AFC Hornchurch.

Pearson with his first goal for the Mariners and Elding (2) put Town in a commanding position after the break. The away side put Town under pressure during the second half but the Mariners defended resolutely and McKeowen was called upon to make a couple of good saves. Townsend added a fourth in 72nd minute to put the tie beyond doubt.

Grimsby will have to wait until Monday to see who they play but the last 16 contains some teams they'd rather avoid if they want to improve their chances of getting to Wembley. Gateshead, Kidderminster and Luton all remain in the competition, although Luton and Gateshead have yet to win their ties from the previous round. The Mariners have already beaten holders Darlington in the previous round.

One casualty of the FA Trophy is Town's match at Tamworth on 4th February, which has been postponed because of Grimsby's involvement in the FA Trophy on that day. Town's fixture at Woking with Hayes and Yeading is also in doubt on 25th Feb in case the Mariners go on to the Quarter Finals.
