22 Man Squad Planned

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/05/2012

TOWN are aiming to have a 22-man squad for next season, which will make the Mariners one of the most competitive teams in the division next year.

Grimsby have released 8 players in the summer, plus Makofo has been told he is surplus to requirements, so a squad of this size will see them signing about another 10 new members in the summer.

Over the course of last season Grimsby used about 35 players in total, including loanees.

As well as the managers, most of last season's key players remain at the club so hopefully it won't require the kind of rebuilding exercise in the summer that has been the curse of the last few seasons when continuity has been the exception rather than the rule.

Town director John Fenty told the Grimsby Telegraph: "The managers have put proposals to us that involve a squad of 22 professional players - and we tend to subscribe to that.

"There will be chopping and changing but the managers have some fresh ideas and I am very optimistic.

"The managers have a had a full year in this division now and they know the level and the players very well.

"They are hard-working and relentless in the pursuit of new players. I take my hat off to them for that.

"They have been going to game after game looking at potential targets."
