Beat the Bookies: Week 14

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/11/2012

JUST one winner last week but the fact that Macclesfield were 10/1 to win at Swindon meant that a healthy profit nevertheless was recorded to bring the winnings for the season to over 300 quid (from a total stake of 520 quid).

The other FA Cup tips weren't far off either: Cambridge City had their chances against MK Dons and Hendon were beating Aldershot for a large chunk of the game at the Rec. All in all the number of long odds shocks confirmed what we find most years - the early rounds of the FA Cup are a punter's paradise.

Town are strong favourites to beat Woking this weekend. Woking are one of the most inconsistent sides in the division. They're either good or very bad. You'd expect Town to take all the points based on reports of the Surrey side's last two games, but you'd have to put a lot of money on Town to win to get much of a return.

Premier League

  • Everton v Sunderland - away win (8.6, Smarkets). Everton seem to be doing well but a close inspection of their form tells you they have only won 1 out of 6. Sunderland haven't won many but they have conceded very few so they're not a million miles off where they need to be to win games.

  • Reading v Norwich - away win (3.4, Marathon). Reading seem to leak bad goals in every game this season. They still haven't won a game yet this season. Norwich have pulled away from the relegation zone in recent weeks and on current form you'd expect Norwich to be favourites, not the Royals.

    League Two

  • Cheltenham v Burton Albion - away win (4.75, Boylesports). On recent form there's not much to choose between these two sides so it's surprising to see Cheltenham as such strong favourites. Burton had a good win at Plymouth on Tuesday night so they're obviously in good nick and may fancy another away trip to the West Country!

    Blue Square Premier

  • Forest Green v Stockport - away win (5.09, Pinnacle). Big spending Forest Green have won just 1 of 6, and lost the other 5. Stockport are steadily climbing up the league, and their only recent league loss was a 3-2 defeat to Wrexham - hardly a drubbing!

  • Tamworth v AFC Telford - away win (3.25, Bet 365). Tamworth have lost 5 out of 6 games, AFC Telford have lost just 1 out of 6 in the same period. If that's anything to go by an away win looks the most likely of the three possible outcomes.
